The lighthouse, known locally as Giordan lighthouse was established in the 1650s and was built by the British army in 1853. It is located on top of a hill and set back 800meters from the cliff falling directly to the sea. The nearby vegetation is very sparse except for some minor farming activity while the climate is typically Mediterranean. In the past, the lighthouse lantern used to work with oil and later with electrical equipment. But towards the end of June 1994 a new lighting system was installed. This system which is still operation at present, works automatically and needs less maintenance and surveillance. The beam flashes every 7.5 seconds and can be seen from about 20 nautical miles distance. Currently the Malta Maritime Authority is in charge of Giordan Lighthouse. However, the Armed forces of Malta, Vodafone, Go mobile and Data track also make use of the building to house their transmitting equipment.

Due to its rural environment Giordan lighthouse was chosen to be the background station for the measurements. The geographical coordinates of this station are 36o 4' 24" North, 14o 12' 9" East and it is located 167 metres above sea level. Currently Giordan lighthouse serves as the principal Global Atmospheric Watch station for the Central Mediterranean.

Another station is located (36o 2' 88" North, 14o 15' 55" East) at the University building - Gozo center in the village of Xewkija. Since this station is close to the main road joining Victoria to Mgarr harbour and also nearby an industrialized area this station is considered an urban station on the island of Gozo.
