Comprehension, real and genuine, is often the key to lasting peace.

The Mediterranean, which has been the cradle of so many civilizations and whose history is quintessentially cross-cultural, faces, as it always did in the past - recent and remote - several challenges, ranging from long-standing regional conflicts to diverse problems and issues of a political, social, and economic nature. EMMHS course would precisely seek to understand the often complex historical origins of currently prevailing conditions and situations - a task which demands a thorough examination of their sources and of their whole protracted processes which have long been at work in the Euro-Mediterranean region.

This October the Department of History of the University of Malta will be launching a new postgraduate programme – the European Masters in Mediterranean Historical Studies (EMMHS). Funded by the EU, the programme has been designed and organized jointly by a partnership of six reputable Universities – Malta, Athens, Pisa, Sofia, Thessaloniki, and Valencia.

EMMHS is a one-year full-time taught (evening) course, which is interdisciplinary and offers candidates a wide choice of study-units on historical themes ranging from pre-historic to modern times.

It aims to provide candidates with an objective analysis of the long-term history of the Mediterranean, both as a single regional entity and in its composite parts. Moreover it seeks to understand the often complex historical origins of currently prevailing conditions and situations in the Mediterranean world. EMMHS assigns importance to the comparative approach to the history of societies of the Mediterranean and Mediterranean Europe, considered in their political, economic, social, and cultural dimensions. The course shows an appreciation for the value of the diversity of opinion and promotes the importance of different interpretations.
